What is Express Entry?

Express Entry is a convenient and simple online permanent resident application portal provided by Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada for applicants.

When filling in the application, the Express Entry automatically calculate the applicant’s scores based on the age, educational credential, overseas work experience, Canadian work experience, language level etc. for the principle applicant and family member, such as spouse.

When you qualify the basis requirement for one of the three categories in Express Entry and you submit Express Entry profile, you will receive a Express Entry profile number.


How do applicants submit permanent resident through Express Entry?

IRCC regularly sends “invitation to apply” to candidates who are already in the Express Entry pool with certain scores. The selected applicants shall apply permanent resident through Express Entry.

IRCC make rounds of invitations based on the following streams from time to time:

1. Federal Skilled Worker stream

2. Canadian Experience Class stream

3. Federal Skilled Trades stream

*Applicants are more likely to be invited if they meet one or more stream.


Who is eligible to apply under Federal Skilled Worker?

a. The total score reaches 67 (out of 100)

b. At least one consecutive year of full-time NOC 0, A, B work experience in the past 10 years (or equivalent part-time, if applicable)

c. The language level (English or French) reaches CLB 7 and the result is valid for two years

d. Completion of Secondary School

e. There is enough money to support you and your family settle in Canada

f. No criminal record, in good health, etc.


Who is eligible to apply under Canadian Experience Class?

a. At least 12 months of Canadian work experience in the past 3 years (no continuous work is required), and the job category meets NOC 0, A and B (full-time or part-time), the work experience during full time period and voluntary work do not count.

b. Meet the minimum language requirements: CLB 5 for NOC B; CLB 7 for NOC 0 and A.

c. Have legal authorization to work

d. At least secondary school graduation

e. Have sufficient funds to help you and your family settle in Canada (if you are living and working in Canada at the time of application, you do not need to provide proof of funds)

f. No criminal record, in good health, etc.


Who is eligible to apply for Federal Skilled Trades?

a. You have at least 2 years relevant working experience in the past 5 years (full-time or equivalent part-time)

b. Your work duties meet the job requirement for that skilled trade as set out in NOC

c. Your job categories meet the requirements of federal skilled trades, such as electrician, construction worker, maintenance worker, equipment maintenance worker, utility supervisor and technical worker, chef, butcher, baker, etc.

d. You have

a. full-time job offer for total period of at least 1 year, or

b. the certificate of qualification in that skilled trade issued by a Canadian provincial, territorial or federal authority.

e. CLB 5 for speaking and listening, CLB 4 for reading and writing

f. At least completion of secondary school

g. There is enough money to support you and your family settlement in Canada, unless you are currently able to legally work in Canada and have a valid job offer from an employer in Canada.

h. No criminal record, in good health, etc.


What if you’re Express Entry score is in the low range?

1. Improve language scores,

2. Increase work experience

3. The spouse could help get extra points in terms of language and educational background

4. A job offer supported by a labour market impact assessment from an employer in Canada

5. Confirmation of nomination from a province or territory in Canada, which can contribute 600 points in Express Entry.

Government application fee: $825 permanent resident application fee (principal applicant and spouse), $500 permanent resident rights fee (principal applicant and spouse), $225 immigration application fee (each child aged 22 and below, if applicable), $85 (or $170 per family) biometric fingerprint information collection fee.

Other expenses: Academic certification, language examination, physical examination expenses, document translation expenses, mailing expenses, no crime certificate, etc
